UN Mission in Ligeria (26)
VBC Security Contributor William Parker and I continue our embed with 1st Platoon, 26 Royal Victorian Regiment deployed as part of the United Nation International Support Mission in Ligeria (UNISML).
We arrived back to Patrol Base (PB) Kilo a presence patrol with 1st Platoon. During the patrol, 1st Platoon took small arms fire and found two separate weapons cache.
After we returned back to the PB, Lieutenant Hawthorne ordered the base to increase its security.
“Are you expecting an attack on the PB,” Parker asked.
“I am just taking precautions,” said Lieutenant Hawthorne. “I have no concrete intelligence to suggest that the PB is going to be attacked. But I am definitely seeing some pattern here.”
The next day, the platoon heard over the radio that a French patrol was hit by an IED while traveling on Highway One. WO Rousseau immediately led a reaction force and responded to the blast site.
As we arrived at the blast site, we saw a French armoured personnel carrier was struck an IED injuring three soldiers. The medic from 1st Platoon provided emergency medical care, however the injuries of the three French soldiers were too severe and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The story continues next week.
