King's Cross suburban departure 1976/7

It could be the 1940s or earlier... A class 31-hauled GN line afternoon peak train from Moorgate (or morning empty stock - see earlier caption) leaves the 'Hotel Curve' platform at Kings Cross. The train is composed of BR standard non-corridor suburban stock.

 

Re-starting on the steep gradient with a crowded train was a challenge in steam days. Sometimes engines stalled, playing havoc with the timetable - read 'Top Shed' by Peter Townend.
