Derby RTC Wagon test TIPH93243 8 August 1987

Torsional Stiffness testing of a new type of freight wagon, TIPH93243 is seen in the RTC Weighbridge on the 8 August 1987.

This is a test where the all the individual wheel loads of the wagon are measured at the same time, whilst subjecting the wagon to a simulated track twist.

The twist is simulated by inserting steel packings between the wheel and rail.

During the test the wheel load must be maintained above 40% of the average wheel load on an axle at all times. All this is in aid of proving resistance to derailment at slow speed.

Read about how and why trains were tested in the 80s and 90s in my RAIL VEHICLE TESTING book - ISBN-9781999935603.
