Teeth on Sheath

Equisetum arvense - Horsetail is one of the Sphenopsida - similar plants that once grew in carboniferous forests.

Interestingly:

The stem sheaths have 18-20 short, black-tipped pointed teeth.

There is an equal number of grooves in the stem as teeth on the sheath.
