“Po-ta-to-chips” and Goldfinches
A long, twittering "per-chic-o-ree" or "po-ta-to chip." The American Goldfinch is known for singing in flight, which adds to their cheerful, "wave-like" flight pattern. The American Goldfinch is so popular that it is the State bird of Washington, New Jersey and Iowa. American Goldfinches are active, acrobatic finches that balance on the seed heads of thistles, dandelions, and other plants to pluck seeds. These are very healthy birds. The oldest known American Goldfinch was 10 years 9 months old when it was recaptured and rereleased during a banding operation in Maryland. We found this little guy sitting on a thistle and plucking its seeds.
