Growing up I belonged to the ICL book club. The books were not expensive, under five dollars if I recall, and I wound up with several shelves of them. Like most book clubs of the time they ran specials where if you got someone to join you got free books and they got an introductory offer that brought book price to less than a paperback. Needless to say my cats were each members.
See below for a overview of the product. What is left out is that each binding was based on a historic model and came with a tear sheet giving the history of the original binding.
They turn up all the time in antique and used book stores. Sometimes priced around five dollars sometimes a outrageous twenty or more.
“The International Collectors Library was a book club series published by Doubleday Publishing Co Garden City, New York. The books are inexpensive reprints of great literature. The covers are made from faux Leather and nicely decorated. The quailty of the books is rather on the inexpensive side. The paper used was highly acidic and very prone to yellowing. The faux leather used for the covers did not age well and would crack easily along the fold and the spline is completely detatched. The gilding impressed on the cover and spline add a nice decorative touch. The books also includ a sewn in satin book mark.”
