Tidal Flats

Idle

on the beach

a summer Sunday

in the sun

as a boy

watching the gulls glide gracefully

over the waves

my toes

align with

the sand ridges

left by the receding tide

roll

from side to side

sand oozing over each toe

the suction

holds me fast

until a wave

slithers along the flat

tickles my insteps

and sets my toes

free...
