Elizabeth Fry. Prison reformer.

Quaker, Elizabeth Fry ( née Gurney) was born into a well-known Norwich banking family. She married another banker, Joseph Fry, with whom she had 11 children but spent much of her time in voluntary work, especially in the field of prison reform and the education of women.

Her work concentrated first and foremost on the plight of women and convicted children in prison. Although her work was mainly informed by her religious convictions, her compassion for the prisoners also took account of their living conditions , which she struggled to improve, against much opposition initially from a male-dominated society but, undaunted, she continued her work, publishing a book, 'Observations of the Siting, Superintendence and Government of Female Prisoners' and also addressed parliamentary committees and continued her own endless round of prison visits.

Here she is remembered in one of the Staircase windows, the gift of the local Girls' Friendly Society to Liverpool Anglican cathedral.
