The Nativity
Nativity scene, complete with ox and ass. Detail of the 1874 memorial window in St Giles' cathedral, Edinburgh for James Monteith, Calcutta merchant ( born Thornhill 1807, died London 1872). It was erected by his brother, Duncan, a fellow Calcutta merchant.
Many members of the minor aristocracy of Scotland travelled to India, especially to Bengal, where they made their fortunes as merchants , mainly in the textile trades, before returning to Scotland to build grand mansions and, often, like the Monteith brothers, to carry out philanthropic works.
The glass is by James Ballantine & Son, to the design of Noel Paton and Robert Herdman.
