Embroidered angel
This angel is one of two which appear on an Arts & Crafts' movement ecclesiastical stole. Designed by Tom Wardle, son of Thomas Wardle, the local silk mill and dyeworks' owner, who collaborated closely with William Morris, it was worked by Margaret Wardle ( Lady Gaunt) and forms part of the collection of embroideries which belong to All Saints' church, Leek, Staffordshire.
The stole is made of cream damask, embroidered with gold thread and floss silks. It also incorporates glass 'gems' and some sequins and is lined with silk satin , embroidered with red silk and metallic thread. There is a dove in the centre but it was too dark to photograph that and the material much too fragile to allow flash. The whole is interlined with paper.
