Bourse & Chamber of Commerce

Frontage of the stock exchange and chamber of commerce in Marseille, France. The foundation stone was laid in 1852 and the architect was a local man, Pascal Xavier Coste.

The decoration represents the maritime and trading history of the port of Marseille. Topped by two Greek gods with maritime connections ( Neptune and Aphrodite), flanked by cherubs, the next section of the building honours great seafarers and explorers of the world, remembering, from left to right, Jean-François La Pérouse, Abel Janszoon, Abel Tasman, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan, James Cook and Jules Sébastien D'Urville.

To left and right of the central columns are Euthymenes and Pytheas, explorers from centuries BC. Just visible on each side at entrance level are two more elaborate sculptures by Eugène Guillaume, which represent allegories of navigation and commerce.

The building still acts as the stock exchange and chamber of commerce and also houses a maritime museum.
