Judgement of Herod

In the right hand light, Herod, with his golden crown, is shown questioning Christ, who, as King of Heaven, wears, not an earthly crown but a mandorla. Some brief notes on the medieval glass , hanging on the wall of the cathedral, suggest that the pale blue glass represents the skies of heaven, while the darker blue below shows an earthly sky, suggesting that Christ belonged in both worlds.

Re-set 13th century stained glass in the sanctuary of the cathedral of St Nazaire, Béziers. The cathedral, originally of Norman construction, suffered several catastrophes and many alterations over the centuries. The windows in the sanctuary were installed in the 18th century and the earlier fragments of glass were placed top and bottom of each. You really need binoculars to appreciate them properly and they are difficult to photograph , as they are set at an angle and the sanctuary is inaccessible.
