Question

the top of the box originally had a crackle finish. I tried to go with it but it's not the look I want. Ideas for smoothing out of the top? I've gessoed and sanded a few times, not much progress. Eventually I'm trying to get to a smooth layer of gesso with some sharpie and watercolor work.
