I can't claim originality for this idea, as a good friend and fellow Guildford Model Engineering Society member has produced a wonderful layout using 65mm PVCu square downpipe as the structural element.
My trial section shows the concept:
A pair of laterals, joined by a ladder of cross members. In my case, spaced at 115mm centres, so coinciding with every third sleeper of PECO SM-32 track. Baseboard width will vary from 38" down to 9" as shown here. Under the trackbed is aluminium mosquito mesh, allowing real ballast to drain. The track itself is raised on 15mm pillars (cut-down plastic wall plugs) to provide ballast depth. Basic scenery is 'Turfus Artificialarta".
