Defense of Little Round Top, Overview
The Battle of Gettysburg, fought 150 years ago, was a crucial turning point in the American Civil War. It was the point where the Confederates came closest to achieving a meaningful victory to demand peace with the Union and acceptance of their succession. The Union however held on and won after three brutal days of fighting. One of the key moments of that fight took place on the second day, late afternoon, July 2, 1863. Within 10 minutes of losing the critical heights of Little Round Top, the Union 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, V Corps, under Colonel Strong Vincent, arrived just in time to hold the line against the Alabama Brigade of Hood’s Division. At the far left flank of the Union Army, the 20th Maine Regiment under Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain withstood two assaults by the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Nearly out of ammunition, Chamberlain then led a courageous bayonet charge which cleared the field and helped secure Little Round Top.
While this is the engagement I am capturing in this MOC, the 20th was not alone that day. The 16th Michigan, 44th New York and 83rd Pennsylvania also showed tremendous bravery and sufferered terrible losses, including Colonel Strong Vincent himself, while defending their positions. In Memoriam.

This was something I have always wanted to do! The account of this real-life engagement in Michael Shaara's fictionalized Killer Angels has always struck me as one of the most stirring moments in U.S. History, and to be able to finally capture it properly meant a lot personally to me. The moment I saw Lego's Cavalry Builder set, I knew I could finally create it. I barely finished it in time for our Battle of Gettysburg collaborative display at Brickfair VA 2013. This one is definitely a keeper for me! It won Best Historical at BFVA 2013.
