HMS Surprise
HMS Surprise is famous for several reasons. It’s the ship from the outstanding adventure movie, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which is based on Patrick O’Brian’s great Aubrey-Maturin series of 20 books. I highly recommend both the movie and the books.
The real HMS Surprise of this time period started life under a French flag but was captured by the Royal Navy in 1796 and classified as a 28-gun sixth-rate frigate. In 1799 she recaptured HMS Hermione after that ship’s bloody mutiny, but was sold out of the service in 1802.
HMS Surprise was built with all Lego using specs from the real ship, with details from the Aubrey-Maturin series and watching Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World a couple more times for comparison.
100% Lego. Won Best Watercraft MOC at Brickfair VA 2012.
