On Tuesday 20/7/2021, a late-running 2MP9 (SCT intermodal) is seen powering up through the yard at Tailem Bend (SA) with the epic combo of C503-EL60-EL62-csr012-cf4403-sct006 in charge.
The 44-year old C503 was sent to Dooen on 5PM9 (18/7) for a test run before heading to WA to be hired by Qube/Watco.
C503 had been in storage for 7 years after an engine failure when on long term hire with Southen Shorthaul Railroad. In late 2020 it (along with sisters C502 & C508) were sent to Islington workshops for overhauls & repainting.
Having entered government service for VicRail on 19/7/1977, ownership of C503 (plus the other 9 members) was transferred to nrc in the first half of 1995, but was stored in late 1996 after a broken crankshaft. After Silverton had purchased all C class locos (apart from C501) in 2003, C503 was overhauled & returned to service in 2007, after which CFCLA took up ownership (along with C502 & C508). In 2011 it was painted in the SSR yellow & black livery (only member to wear that scheme as of 2021 despite said company owning 6 C’s) to reflect long term hire until being sidelined in 2014, being stored at Goulburn railway workshops.
