WMPTE 244H, West Bromwich, 1971

In the ownership of West Midlands PTE, former West Bromwich Corporation, Daimler CVG6, 244H passes the entrance to Oak Lane bus garage in West Bromwich during June 1971. Almost impossible to see, the bus carries a small gold 'H' suffix behind its fleet number, denoting that it is a former WBCT bus. With the PTE having taken control of the former fleets of 'W'olverhampton, 'W'alsall and 'W'est Bromwich in 1969, the decision was taken to use the last letter of the town's names to indicate which fleet it came from. So Wolverhampton was 'N', Walsall was 'L', and later in 1974, Coventry a 'Y'. WMPTE continued to use the former BCT fleet numbering system, not seeing the need to use an 'M' suffix on ex Birmingham buses. This also applied to ex Midland buses inherited in 1973, these buses continuing to use their former Midland Red fleet numbers.
