WMPTE 69L, The Bridge, Walsall, 1970

On the establishment of the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (WMPTE) in October 1969, the newly created Executive was keen to repaint examples of former municipal buses in to their new corporate livery of blue and cream.

The initial repaints had more of an impact in Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Walsall, where their municipal liveries were considerably different from that of the former Birmingham City Transport, which the new WMPTE livery was based upon.

69L was a former Walsall Corporation Daimler CVG6 motorbus, receiving the new WMPTE livery in January 1970. This was in stark contrast to its original allover pale-blue Walsall colours.

It so happened that this batch of buses (61L - 75L) were going through repaint in late 1969 into early 1970, so became some of the first recipients.

And all of this batch of buses only every received one repaint into these colours. So by the time the last of these vehicles were being withdrawn in early 1977, they were looking very tired.

27th March 1970.
