Sheffield Transport 663, High Street, Sheffield, c1974
The streets virtually deserted, Sheffield Transport 663 is captured turning from High Street into Sheffield's Haymarket. Certainly an early morning view, the photograph captures the feel of the City as it awakens to face what promises to be a warm summer's day.
Then a modern vehicle, the dual-door Park Royal bodied PDR2 Atlantean had been new to the Department in April 1970. The yellow forward-mounted sign informed passengers that the bus was fitted with the Videmat electro-mechanical ticketing system. This avoided having to queue to pay the driver; passengers paying the exact coinage into the on-board Videmat machine, and a self-administered ticket bearing an image of the coins paid being issued. To achieve this, the forward entrance was segregated for split loading; - boarding to the left was 'pay the driver', or to the right, the self-service payment machine. The idea being to speed up loading times for one-man-operated buses.
