West Riding 108, Wakefield Bus Station
An early 1970s view of Wakefield bus station, still very much in its original condition. West Riding funded the construction of Wakefield Bus Station, work commencing in 1952. The bus station was the jewel in its crown and a major hub of its bus operations in West Yorkshire, along with Castleford.
Taken in an age before pedestrian segregation became the norm in such spaces, an elderly lady is pictured walking past the departing bus.
Bus 108 was a Roe bodied AEC Reliance, one of a number owned and operated by West Riding. Originally numbered 927 (corresponding with its registration), the bus had been purchased new in 1961 along with eleven others (920-931). Their arrival coincided with the large numbers of Guy Wulfrinians being received by West Riding at that time.
Maybe someone could enlighten me as to when the renumbering of these buses took place? Thanking you.
Scanned from an inherited and undated 35mm slide.
