WMPTE 4384, Cleveland Street, Wolverhampton, 1978

The West Midlands PTE took delivery of 200 MCW bodied Bristol VRT buses between 1973 and 1975.

These buses were allocated to Walsall and Wolverhampton, causing the withdrawal of a large number of crew-operated vehicles. Both Park Lane and Bilston Street/Cleveland Road Garages were allocated Bristol VRTs, and these buses were quickly put to work on local services around the town.

4384 was a Park Lane allocated bus, and is seen departing the 598 terminal point in Cleveland Street, Wolverhampton working a local service Bushbury Hill. The route served the large Low Hill housing estate to the North East of the town, and still does in an altered form in 2021.

The bus behind 4384 is 4000, one of the 25, 33ft long dual-doored 'Jumbo' Fleetlines allocated to Wolverhampton in 1970. 4000 was the first of the 25 to be withdrawn after suffering an engine fire in Wolverhampton's Stafford Street in 1980.
