BEA Airport Coach

MLL740 was one of a class of sixty five coaches built to a London Transport design as replacements for Commer Avenger airport coaches. Although never actually owned by London Transport; maintenance and operation was undertaken on behalf of British European Airways (BEA) for the service linking the West London Air Terminal at Gloucester Road and London, Heathrow Airport. The raised floor at the rear provided space beneath for a luggage locker to supplement the saloon luggage pen and internal racks. The chassis were identical to the RF class with the exception of axle spacers to accommodate an 8' 0" wide body.

Replacement of this type commenced in 1966 with the introduction of double deck Routemaster coaches which towed luggage trailers. MLL 740 was the last of the type owned by BEA and the only one to receive the orange/white livery, the final version of four variations applied to this type of vehicle.

Disposal was direct to the London Bus Preservation Group in May 1973. The vehicle was restored to its original livery a few years ago.
