"A Tonic for the Nation". No10

The Festival of Britain 1951: A view of the Fairway Fountains situated beneath the imposing 250ft high 'Skylon'; a slender 'cigar' shaped structure that dominated the South Bank Exhibition site. Skylon was held upright by taught fly-wires, the base of the structure being suspended above ground (using a cantilever principle) by cables strung between the three legs seen behind the fountain. Fitted with its own internal lighting system, Skylon was illuminated each and every night during the exhibition and could be seen over a considerable distance. Sadly, it was dismantled for scrap metal when South Bank Exhibition site was cleared in early 1952, however, small parts of it are rumoured to still exist in the hands of private collectors.
