Callan!

My mum lives in an old 1930s semi detached house, and every time I open the door to the understairs pantry, I'm greeted by this lamp fitted into an ancient Bakelite lampholder, hanging from a braided electical cord. It always makes me think about the opening scenes to Callan, a TV series shown on television in the 60s and early 70s.

In the tile sequence, a similar looking light bulb, swinging on a braided cord lit the shadowy backdrop of a brick wall that had Callan's name painted on to it. The scene was made more sinister by the bulb finally being shot to pieces in a very dramatic way. I loved the music that accompanied it too.

For those who don't remember Callan, here's what I'm on about: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IDdSWjpPJDg

Who was Callan?

Callan was the title of a British television series, set in the murky world of espionage, that aired on ITV broadcasting over four seasons spread out between 1967 and 1972.

The series starred British actor Edward Woodward as David Callan, a reluctant professional killer for a shadowy branch of the British Government's intelligence services known as 'the Section'.

As for Bakelite, well it's made from: thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride. ...Try saying that after a few drinks!
