Shackletons at Lossiemouth, 1989
A photograph taken on 11th September 1989 showing Avro Shackleton AEW Mk2’s WR 957 and WR 965 at RAF Lossiemouth, parked up at their dispersal points on this Northern Scottish airbase.
Belonging to No8 Squadron, these aircraft were amongst several of the type that provided the UK with airbourne early warning capability for nearly 20 years. The last five of the type were taken out of RAF service in 1991.
The furthest aircraft of the two, WR965 was lost in tragic accident just a few months after this picture was taken, when on the 30th April 1990 and flying at an alttitude of only 700ft, it crashed into high ground on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, with the loss of all ten aircrew on board.
