Help for Yunnan's Poorest
We are a group of Chinese and foreign students from Yunnan University and had a chance to visit Yunnan’s poorhouse on Laborday. We spend two days in the little Miao minority village Dong JiaShan in LuQuan County. Being used to a life in China’s cities the grinding poverty and neediness we found there was beyond our imagination. The next bigger village is a strenuous 1 ½ hour walk on foot; people live in poor housing without water supplies. Because of the poor water condition they can only grow very few vegetables and wash dishes in the same water they used for cooking. The clothes of the Miao are all covered by a thick layer of dust and mud and people lack even the most basic items like soap.
The problem that struck us most is that the future of the Miao children is unsecure. We had the chance to talk to one little girl named Yao Sheng Qi. She could neither write her own name, nor knew her own age. She only went to school for one year, after that she had stay home to care for her little brother.
Despite their misery the people in MengJiaShan village never complained of their hardship and where probably the most hospitable people we ever met. After returning to Kunming we decided the try to give something back to try to change their situation for the better. This is why we need your help:
We want to collect donations and bring them to MengJiaShan village. Chinese and foreign students in Kunming must have many articles which they don’t need anymore, because they prepare to leave Yunnan Province or plan to go home. Those things might be of little or no use to you, but could make a big difference for the villagers of MengJiaShan. We thought of clothes in good condition, kitchen supplies, and simple (study) books for the children. If you have any other ideas, please share them with us!
We will collect items from today on to July 1.
For further question or to make an appointment to deliver the donations, please get in touch with us.
If you have friends who could also be interested in helping Yunnans poorest, please spread the news.
