Crystalized Summer Snow - Remains of Hailstorm In Summerhaven - Image 5
It was a surprise to see crystalized snow in the summer in Summerhaven, on Mount Lemmon, near Tucson, Arizona. We asked a resident about it. She said it was the remains of a hailstorm. This is our Summer Monsoon season...;))
We had not planned to drive up to Summerhaven on Sunday, so there was no suitable camera with me in the car. The iPhone's camera is like my parents' Brownie Box Camera, but with color!
It's always at least 10 degrees F cooler in Summerhaven atop Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. Summerhaven is in a "sky island" of conifer trees above the tree line. It looks a lot like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, or the White Mountains of northern Arizona. It's a pleasant drive up the mountain. There are a number of hiking trails and campsites. The views are spectacular.
Be warned, there is not much to see or do in the town itself..;)
The town suffered a devastating fire a few years ago. Many houses were burned, and the forest was blackened and looked really sad. It is amazing how well the green has returned.
