House Republican leaders are trying to corral enough votes to pass President Donald Trump’s massive tax and immigration bill ahead of a July 4 deadline imposed by Trump. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has said a vote on final passage could take place as early as Wednesday. Several House Republicans have voiced concerns about changes made by the Senate that would result in further increases to the deficit and deeper cuts to Medicaid. House Democrats are united in opposition to the legislation, which would also extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and increase spending at the border. Trump has no public events on his schedule Wednesday.

Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), chairman of the House Budget Committee, when asked whether Republicans have the votes to advance a rule needed to begin debate on President Donald Trump’s legislative package, said they are “working through the process.”

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts) said Wednesday that Congress is stuck in “a game of legislative chicken” over President Donald Trump’s priority legislative package.

“The House passed it, hoping the Senate would kill it,” McGovern, the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, said on the House floor. “The Senate passed it … hoping the House would grow a spine. Everyone is playing a game of legislative chicken, voting for a bad bill and thinking the other chamber will be the one to fix it. This is nuts.”
