IDF airstrikes in Gaza

Hamas's advanced tunnel

IDF airstrikes in Gaza

Last week, Palestinian sources revealed new details about the location of the attack. According to them, it was a network of tunnels that Hamas rebuilt after Operation Protective Edge, and which the organization's leadership used to hide and conduct fighting. Even today, despite the Saudi report, Hamas refuses to confirm or deny the reports of his death.

Sources in the Palestinian terrorist organizations told the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat that the tunnel that was attacked was used by Hamas senior officials to hide and conduct fighting. The tunnel includes oxygen tubes designed to allow survival in the event of a collapse or attack.

The area where Sinwar was attempted to be killed included a network of tunnels that Hamas rebuilt after it was damaged in Operation Protective Edge in 2014. The network was recently exposed in IDF documentation.

During Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021, Sinwar was in such a tunnel with Rafe Salameh, the commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade. The two were slightly injured and survived the attack. Salameh was killed in the summer of 2024 alongside Muhammad Deif.

Meanwhile, the fate of Muhammad Sinwar is still unclear - but IDF attacks in the area of the European Hospital in Khan Yunis continue to prevent terrorists from approaching the area and rescuing missing people.

Extremist, one of the planners of the October 7 massacre

Muhammad Sinwar, born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp, is considered the most powerful man left in the Gaza Strip in Hamas' military wing. He is the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar and is considered one of the planners of the murderous October 7 massacre. Sinwar, who commanded the Khan Yunis Brigade for a long time, was the mastermind behind the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit in June 2006, and worked to secure his brother Sinwar's release as part of the Shalit deal in 2011. He rose through the ranks of Hamas' military wing, gained extensive experience, and was trusted by members of the murderous terrorist organization.

Muhammad Sinwar was imprisoned for three years by the Palestinian Authority. He was involved in numerous terrorist attacks against Israeli civilian and military targets since the early 1990s, and particularly since the outbreak of the Second Intifada. He was behind the launching and production of Qassam rockets and mortar bombs, and behind hundreds of shooting attacks, the planting of explosives, and financing the production of weapons.

During the Second Intifada, he survived three assassination attempts. In October 2004, his home in Khan Yunis was demolished by Israeli engineering forces, due to his involvement in planning attacks and launching rocket fire at Israel. In October 2006, a targeted assassination attempt on him failed, and the missile intended for the car he was driving hit a nearby building.

Rafah Brigade Commander, Survived Assassination Attempts in the Past

Muhammad Shabana is the commander of the Rafah Brigade in Hamas' military wing. He is considered a local senior official focused on the southern sector of the Gaza Strip, rather than a strategic senior official at the organizational level. His powers mainly concern the ground management of Rafah, local fighting against IDF forces, and the operation of infrastructure in the area.

Shabana was the target of several assassination attempts by the IDF during the war. On December 20, 2023, an attack on his family home in eastern Rafah was reported, which was considered an assassination attempt, but he survived the attack. On May 24, 2024, the IDF attacked an underground compound in Rafah where Shabana was staying, but this attempt also failed to result in his elimination. In Gaza, there are fears that Shabana was also with Sinwar in the assassination attempt at the European Hospital.

"Abu Anas" was appointed commander of the Rafah Brigade in 2014, after the assassination of Ra'ad al-Attar in Operation Protective Edge. The Rafah Brigade, under his command, consists of four battalions: South, East, West and North Rafah.
