Released Hostage Maria Schem Speaks

“When I arrived in Gaza on October 7, the first day, I fainted. I remember waking up in bed wearing different clothes. My captor made sure to remind me that he had seen me without underwear.

During those two months, I didn’t have my period because I had lost a lot of blood. My body was traumatized. It’s normal.

One day, I got lost in my thoughts. I was so tense I couldn’t breathe. I had to push those thoughts away and kept telling myself: Just get home and get checked.

When I got to Sheba Medical Center, I simply said, “Please, make sure I’m not pregnant. God forbid, just check that I’m not pregnant. Beyond that, I don’t want to know anything else.” Some things are better left unknown.

They ran some tests. “You’re not pregnant.” I dozed off in the car, and that was it.”
