Oh How The Mighty Nopales Have Fallen

The hard freeze really did a job on the wonderful Nopales Cactus plants in the garden. The are very heavy, since they are really large water storage tanks... The freeze weakened the branches and many bent over, collapsed, and snapped off the supporting trunks.

 

The sidewalk was littered. I had to clear the debris on Friday afternoon. I just slid them off the walkway. Monday I will start cutting them up and throwing them into trash barrels.

 

Nopales Cacti grow quickly, so after a few years, they will be tall and full again.

 

The new young growth in the spring are edible. Fried in olive oil, they do really taste like asparagus... You do have to scrape off the small spines first.
