Lucy's Extraordinary Flyby Of Earth
During the October 16th flyby, NASA's Lucy spacecraft flew by so close to Earth it skimmed the upper layers of our atmosphere inside the orbit of the International Space Station. During the gravity assist maneuver, observers in Australia should have been able to see Lucy glowing as brightly as a 1st magnitude star. Amateur astronomers in the western USA may have also been able to photograph it.
