Tumamoc Hill Transmission Towers

I shot this from the parking lot of Saint Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with a long enough lens, so you cannot really see the various antennas mounted on these towers. See the antennas in my Tumamoc Hill album.

Those towers are line-of-sight relay towers for mounting antennas to send microwave communication signals around the world, and some antennas for receiving and sending radio signals to receivers and from transmitters in Tucson itself.

Microwave signals move in straight lines from one antenna to the next. You want those up high so they are above obstructions and can travel in a straight line to the next closest transmission tower.

Power lines try to stay away from hills and mountains when possible. As I recall there is a power line running up the hill to provide power to the facility at the top of the mountain.
