Lox, Cream Cheese, Tomato, Onion, Basil, Edible Flowers on Pumpernickle
Fancy, open faced, delicious sandwich. Nicely plated on white.
The basil leaves and flowers from the garden made this perfect for me!!
This is reminiscent of my Father...
My Dad's speciality was fabulous sandwiches. He was an inspiration. I still salivate when I think if his culinary endeavors...;))
I know he would have wanted more onion on this!
Oh, and cucumber!
And possibly some leafy lettuce... I'm not sure about the lettuce...
I was introduced to edible flowers for flavor in salads by Leah Kaplan Pekeris, the wife of Chaim Pekeris. He was the head of the Math Department at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, when I was there in the early sixties. Leah added Nasturtium flower petals. They were so delicious. I always try to grow Nasturtiums in my winter garden!
Fortunately, I can have basil flowers almost all year round from my large African Blue Basil plant in a large pot outside my kitchen door. I had better take some cuttings before we get a hard freeze thus winter!!
