Miss Cecily's Friday Pointe Class November 20th, 2015

Miss Cecily Said:

As a school, we have been working hard on the choreography for "Spanish 2015" for the last couple of weeks. Friday Morning, I pulled these red fringed dresses and my lovely, marabou, red fan set out from our ABT Costume Collection - and I had hoped to be able to fool around with photography.at the end of a productive Pointe class that afternoon. One never knows how the dance hour will unfold in real time. Every class is unique; Friday's was fabulous!.

With just a few minutes to spare, I asked my hard- working dancers, if they were in the mood to take a few minutes to quickly put on costumes and pose for photographs. They were...

Squealing and chirping, they scooted off, chattering away, to the other studio for a super quick change, not even knowing what I had in mind. Delighted they were to see the red fringe, and the fans just took us over the top. Kids love costumes, that is the truth...

Notice the dramatic size range in this group, from`very petite, Avery, to tall goddess-in-training Kamryn yet we were able to get ready in about five minutes flat. I asked them to take their hair down, too, which not only takes time but can be funny after having the hair in a bun. We are bun heads:)

I ended up with nine beautiful models - eight in pointe shoes and one in bare legs. To her on-going credit, Mackenzie, who had not been feeling 100% all afternoon, asked me several times and in several ways, if she should even participate, since she was without tights and not wearing her pointe shoes...

I wanted her to be included because this was about capturing a moment, enjoying the positive energy, and working as a team. I recommended that she jump in to the activity if she was feeling up to it!

I love the results. We cooperated beautifully. The dancers are becoming a cohesive fledgling corps de ballet. I think all my young dancers look sparkling, and I couldn't be happier. I hope that any one who looks carefully will notice one set of bare legs and eight in tights, and wonder why.

"This picture symbolizes my Pointe Policy as a teacher of Ballet for 35 years. I do not encourage my students to dance on pointe at any given time unless they are 100 % mentally, physically, and emotionally focused. For example, unlike many of my teachers of half a century ago, I do not want a dancer to keep the pretty yet difficult shoes on at any cost. (What might the cost be? Blisters, pain, loss of focus, potential injury.), You do NOT have to demonstrate how tough you are to me, especially if you are not feeling particularly tough that day. Pointe should be fun, not torture…:)

The moral of the story, "Have fun and dance like you are on pointe every chance you get."
