Mosaic-2 Sabino Canyon Hedgehog Cactus Flower With Insect

I love cactus flowers. Spring in Tucson is glorious when these beauties are in bloom... This lovely flower and bud were on a small cactus that was partially obscured by a perennial plant. These photos were taken on the way back to our starting point.

Without flowering plants, pollinated by insects, there would not be enough oxygen to support mammals. That includes humans.

The green fly was hidden when I started shooting. Fortunately, I shot a series and did capture this interesting fly feeding in the pollen. I love cactus flowers. They seem to bloom for about a day! Then they close. So in my garden I do a careful inspection each evening to try to catch a bloom the next morning. There are so many Cacti in Sabino Canyon, that some cacti flowers are always visible.

These photos were taken on the way back to our starting point. The 75-300mm lens I used for bird shots is not very good for macros, but I was too tired to switch back to my 18-135mm lens...;)
