"Do Not Worry the Elephant Nor Feed Him"
Carte de visite by an unidentified photographer. A cartoon drawing with photographic heads pictures a Union major general resting a hand on the body of an elephant shackled to a post. The pencilled notation above and below the illustration states:
Open every Tuesday
evening in Tibbitts
Block Utica N.Y.
at 8 o'clock.
Ben. Davis & Levi North's
Menagerie & Circus.
Admission 50 cts.
Children half price.
N.B. Do not worry the elephant nor feed him.
An inscription on he back in the same hand adds "This was taken perhaps 15 or 20 years ago. VN"
Two possible explanations for the origin of this image: It is a political cartoon about some aspect of Utica civil or business dealings that involve a former Union officer, or a mockup of an advertisement to be typeset and engraved for print publication.
Searches for the identities of the two men pictured turned up no results. A performer and circus operator named Levi James North (1814-1885) from Long Island, N.Y., was active in America for many years. Known as “America’s Own Horseman," an engraving of him does not match either likeness.
