The Photographer’s Wife

Carte de visite by George L. Holden of McGrawville, N.Y. Susan F. Young Holden, known as Susie or Sissie to her friends, posed with a straw hat in hand in the studio of her husband, George, who practiced photography and dentistry, and dealt in frames, in their hometown of McGrawville. The couple married in 1859 and had their first child, Minnie, the following year. This portrait dates from about 1862-1864, at which time the family of three lived a quiet life in war-torn America.

The years to come proved a mix of joy and sorrow for Susie. In 1866, she gave birth to a second daughter, Martha, who died in 1876. A year later, her husband passed at age 42. Susie never remarried and died in 1922 at about age 84. Her surviving daughter, Minnie, lived to the ripe old age of 101, dying in 1961—the centennial commemoration of the Civil War.
