Passing Interest
Netto page 1
Promotional leaflet for the opening of Netto, Tovil (Maidstone), 1995.
This is the cover of a 4 page flyer distributed to houses Maidstone. If anyone is interested I'll scan the two bargain-filled inside pages; an unsettling mix of brands you've heard of, and many you haven't....
Netto was the first of the cheap supermarkets in Maidstone. Aldi appeared in the UK around the same time (I'd seen them in Birmingham) but didn't reach Maidstone until some years later. Netto no longer exists in the UK and this store is now a Lidl. At the time I heard it said that 'Netto is Swedish for tax-free' (true?), and I think this claim was used in some of their advertising but it doesn't appear here.
A little bit later, as I recall, another discount chain-store opened in Maidstone. To shop there you needed to sign up for their membership card (something to do with tax?) else you had to pay a higher price. That store is still with us though.....Matalan.
