Aurora Chasing im Rhein-Main-Gebiet

Expectations were high for that night of Oct 10th following the space weather forecast of Dr. Skov and NOAA: A G4 solar storm which may bring Aurora Borealis to mid latitudes! But weather forecast was more than frustrating, a heavy rain band and thick cloud coverage was passing our region west of Frankfurt. The only chance I saw eastern Frankfurt direction Fulda. The weather forecasted showed clear sky until 23:00. but it was questionable when the magnetic storm will hit earth. Then the night came in and intensity raised. So I packed my gear and hit the road. I had to pass the major sources of light pollution in our area which are FRA Airport and the city itself before thinking of a place to viewing the sky. But after 70 km passing Hanau I could see stars and a faint red color in the sky so I decided to go for some spaces close to Büdingen like Ronneburg. Already many people gathered there to watch the spectacular show in the sky. Later I changed to Glauburg which is a hilltop discovered ancient Celtic remains. Here I was completely alone and enjoyed the show until 23:00 when cloud coverage pulled in and it started to rain….
