Monument to Thoughtlessness

I say thoughtlessness because there are initials and names and messages carved into this repeatedly defaced rock formation. It could be worse. This isn't a part of a national park, and I don't think it's inside the nearby Staircase/Escalante National Monument, but still, why would anyone want to do this? [BTW, I originally called this a "monument to stupidity" but the next day decided the current title to be better.]
This stands just off US Highway 89 not too far from the Arizona border, but where exactly, I do not know.
I stopped here for a little spontaneous exploration--much of it nude after getting out of sight from the road.
This is a Pano combining two horizontally oriented photos taken with my 35mm lens.
