Jasper at Early Light
Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
The beginning of my first full day in Jasper. I had spent the night in a bare-bones hostel in the park replete with outhouses, no WiFi or phone service and the water trucked in. I got up phenomenally early for me (just before sunrise) in order to drive to the town of Jasper, connect to WiFi and make reservations for the early morning shuttle to Moraine Lake two days hence. I had been led to believe that those reservations were hard to come by and so I wanted to be as near to first in line as I could when reservations opened at 8 AM. It turned out that those reservations weren't quite as hard to get as I'd been told. The shuttle I ended up taking was only about half full. But this I did not know, and so I was rushing to find a connection. I was hesitant to stop along the way, but some of the sights were just so gorgeous I could not resist. This was one of those stops. I have little idea of where this was, exactly, but I was still a fair piece short of the town.
I would have loved to have had more of that early sun's rays hit directly on these peaks, but the mountains behind me, and a few clouds prevented that from happening.
That's the Athabasca River in front of me--Jasper's answer to Banff's Bow River.
This is a Pano combining four photos. I took three more to the right, but the resulting Pano for all seven shots was too narrow to be presented well on a computer screen.
Usually when I process a photo, I begin to process it both as a B&W and color. Often early on I decide on one or the other and then focus my efforts on that. Sometimes I come back to the alternative and work on that--sometimes ending up with a decent result, sometimes not. In this case, for some reason, I never considered the possibility of a monochrome treatment . . . . until the day after uploading the color photo. It turns out I think the B&W is better. I wish I'd thought of it sooner! Well, someday I'll upload the other version.
