London 2007, May. Life Guards. It is alleged that in the Napoleonic era black horses were preferred because they were thought to be stronger. I think it's a misunderstanding coming from the fact that, among the Arabs, "burnt-chestnut" horses were preferred, in a time where Napoleon and its light cavalry units praised horses with Arab blood. Anyway, people bred for colour, and a number of units liked their black horses: French Horse Grenadiers of the Guard, British Life Guards, Royal Horse Guards, and Prussian Leib Hussars. These blacks used by HCav are largely of Irish draught-horse stock: hence these massive chargers…
