Belasco Theater, Los Angeles

The slumped glass street address for the Belasco Theater is incredibly rare. In all of LA, there are only five examples of this type of illuminated sign.

Predating the introduction of neon, the slumped-glass style stuck around for a while before bowing out to the new technology. Typically such signs would be lit from behind with lightbulbs and, in this example, utilizes interchangeable lettering. The Belasco probably had scads of these hand slumped glass letters for use on its interior and exterior marquees, but out of all of it, this is what's left.

As the theater converts to a nightclub space, I sincerely hope they leave this slumped glass address untouched.
