Kew Gardens

The century plant. It lies dormant for fifteen to twenty-five years then sends out one or two rapid stems with blooms on the top. After fifteen years of going nowhere this one grew suddenly to thirty-five feet, so they had to remove a pane of glass to let it out.

The 'century' bit is a slight exaggeration. We read of a Truro couple returning home from holiday earlier this month who found that the idle clump of foliage in their garden had put on a spurt of twenty-five feet and produced flowers up at the top too. They'd been intending to dig it up and throw it out.
