Now I've worked out how to draw a line and change the width in OpenGL I can make some headway on the seaweed and coral.
These are done with some simple l-systems - recursive structures that use rules to replace parts of themselves. Quite effective for trees and other forms that demonstrate repeating patterns.
David is also experimenting with generating a sandy looking texture using perlin noise.
