Pieces of History
NJ Transit train 77 departs Hoboken Terminal with the Central Railroad of New Jersey heritage unit in the lead. Hoboken Terminal was built in 1907 and initially was the main terminal for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. As time went on, Hoboken Terminal changed hands a few times, eventually ending up in the hands of NJ Transit. The 4109 was built in 1968 for the Central Railroad of New Jersey as CNJ GP40P 3677. The 3677 also ended up with NJ Transit, where it served under the new road number of 4106. It was rebuilt in the early 1990s as a GP40PH-2 and received its current number. 4109 was in NJ Transit’s disco paint scheme up until 2019, where it was repainted to honor its origins as part of NJ Transit’s 40th anniversary. It’s quite amazing to see these two pieces of New Jersey railroad history still functioning after all these years, serving the millions of commuters each year in the tri-state area.
