119A-DS53-4GIs-M1Rifles
(associated with DS47) Four Battery A GIs relaxing with their M1 Garand rifles, somewhere in the field, likely somewhere in France, Aug-Sept 1944 (possibly the Argonne Forest near Clermont-en-Argonne; based on other photos in Mr. Smith's collection). My uncle, William A. Ward, is 2nd from right, with the glasses. The others have been identified (not sure of positions) as Joseph Bailey of Monitor, Washington; Max Shapiro of Los Angeles, CA (reportedly an avid photographer); and Ralph "Smoky" Perillo of Terryville, Connecticut. My uncle was a radar crewman with the mobile SC-584 radar used to control the firing of the 90mm cannons (4 per battery).
