Question: What is a major invasive species in my area? If it were to be removed, how would that affect the other trophic levels and the ecosystem as a whole?
One pattern I noticed is my landscape is pretty much divided in half. One half is mostly cleared farmland and the other is cleared for industrial purposes. The small chunk of land my location is found at is right in between those two halves. I would say this is biologically significant to my system. Runoff from farms and construction, stress from human contact, deforestation and air pollution, are all factors that are occurring around my little plot of land. These all affect the quality of life of the organisms in the area. Another pattern I noted is how my small plot of land is surrounded completely by cleared plots of land, one being an old landfill. I would say this also affects the quality of life and is biologically significant for the same reasons as the other pattern. Another thought is that what is stopping people from clearing this plot of land as well? Starting to clear the surrounding area is definitely biologically significant. The soil composition, the animals that live there and the plants that are found there would all be changed. They would also have to drain the pond area somehow, which would completely alter the entire food web and all of the trophic levels.
